AOECS - Association of European Coeliac Societies

Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS)

Founded in 1988, the Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) is an independent, non-profit organisation. It is the umbrella organisation of European national coeliac societies with currently 35 enrolled Member societies across Europe. AOECS represents people who are affected by coeliac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) and seeks to collaborate with international coeliac organisations worldwide.

Type: pan-European disease-specific organisation

Disease area: coeliac disease (Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease. This means that in those with the condition the immune system is mistakenly triggered by a substance to produce antibodies and to attack parts of their own body. In the case of coeliac disease, this substance is gluten and the antibodies produced attack the micro villi that line the small intestine. As food passes through the small intestine the function of the micro villi is to absorb the nutrients necessary to sustain the body and its functions.)
